A number of popular sites such as Bebo, Xuqa, Friendster and have been challenging Myspace's supremacy in the Social Networking arena. However, Facebook has been gathering popularity and is now the most popular site of this type in the UK.
Facebook was established in February 2004 but was primarily for Harvard University students and then to other Universities in the Ivy League. In September 2006, it was made available to everyone and in one short year has become more popular than Myspace. In August 2007, about 6.5 million Britons went on Facebook as compared with 6.3 million for Myspace. Bebo was the third most popular site, followed by Windows Live Spaces and Friends Reunited.
Although currently at the centre of an investigation for failing to protect children on their site, this has not stopped the popularity of the site, with Microsoft wanting to buy a stake in the company (Facebook is reported to be worth £5 billion).
With concerns over the privacy of their members and links to crime, abuse and grooming, how long will it take for the Social Networking bubble to burst?
