Premier League champions Manchester United felt the heat of cup football against Championship side Coventry City. The Carling Cup is often used by the big four to blood youngsters and keep the reserves happy. Normally this will result in a win for the big team as they have a huge strength in depth. However, tonight, Coventry’s first team showed that they were good enough with a 0-2 victory at Old Trafford. Two goals from miniature Maltese striker Michael Mifsud sealed it for the Sky Blues and he could have had a hat trick near the end as he shot over an open goal. Manchester United will not be overly upset by the loss in the least important domestic competition for them, but Coventry will be delighted.

Sky Blue manager Iain Dowie will be particularly pleased not to concede any goals against a side containing Champions’ regulars as well as the juniors. When Coventry beat United at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the FA Cup in 1987, they went on to lift the trophy. Nobody is suggesting that a repeat performance is on the cards, but it is a very encouraging win for a side desperate to get back into the Premiership where they feel that they belong.
